Chapter Thirteen
Torn was restless all week long, looking for, but not finding, any excuse to go into town on the off chance of running into the school teacher. He knew she’d be busy with her classes, and he had plenty of work that needed doing at his own place. But every time he found himself lost in thought of her or wondering what she was doing, an angry scowl crossed his face.
“It weren’t supposed to be this way,” he complained to Pryor when the two men worked at digging the holes for his fence. Torn had stored up the favor during Pryor’s harvest, and true to his word, Pryor was out digging alongside him now that there was no chance of the ground freezing again.
“I know it, man, but what else can you do? You can rant and rail, or you can show her what a peaceful fellow you are. Either one you choose, you can’t go making time move any faster.”
“Tis easy for you to say; you’ve got a wife. A sweet woman, too, who’s good at the home and a good mother! I’m sitting here all alone while the lady who was supposed to be my wife tends to other people’s children all day!” He struck his pick axe into the hard ground with even more force than usual, feeling the anger flow out of his muscles and into the dirt.
“Have you thought of that any?” Pryor asked carefully, not wanting to broach a whole new subject that could complicate matters. He knew he had to speak up, though.
“What do you mean?” Torn asked cautiously.
“Well, it seems Miss Adair has her heart set on being a school teacher, and she certainly worked hard enough to get there. Let’s say she does get smart about you and decides to marry you. Are you expecting her to give up her position?”
“Now how in the world can she keep being a teacher, and be my wife?” Torn demanded as though it was the strangest concept he’d ever heard.
“Many a woman works, especially in the cities. What would you have done if your life had been so different? What if you’d stayed at that castle in Ireland and married Diana? You don’t think she’d have still been a laundry woman?”
“I had naw thought of it, I confess,” he answered in a small voice.
“Well, I’m no lord of a castle, but I know how to run a farm. Pardon my for the comparison, but if two of my horses got married and decided that one of them wasn’t going to work anymore, I’d have two horses looking for a home. Catch my drift?”
“Yeah, something about me and Miss Adair being livestock,” he growled, but Pryor knew he was only kidding.
“What I’m saying is, just because this is Montana and not Ireland and you’re a landowner instead of a servant doesn’t mean you have to go changing everything. If Miss Adair is willing to have you, don’t let a little matter like her being a teacher stop you.
